Service Projects
Buddy groups work together to find community organizations that need our help. These projects give our students the opportunity to put their faith in action by helping to raise money and donating their time to worthy causes. Buddy groups are as follows:
PK and 7th Grade
Kindergarten and 8th Grade
1st Grade and 5th Grade
2nd Grade and 4th Grade
3rd Grade and 6th Grade
Last year's organizations included The Ronald McDonald House, Bobbi and the Strays, Life Center of Long Island, Horseability and The Steven Tiller Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
Band
Students in grades 3 through 8 are given the opportunity to participate in a Band program, administered through the Paul Effman Music Service. There is an additional charge for this program. Lessons are given at various times during the school day (on Monday) and students remain after school until 3PM for a full band practice. Instruments offered are flute, clarinet, trumpet, saxophone, drums, bells and violin. There is a Christmas Concert for the experienced band (4th grade and up) and a Spring Concert for all band students.
Drama
Students in grades 6, 7 & 8 are encouraged to join our Drama Club. Students typically practice twice a week from January to March. A production of the play chosen each year is usually seen in late March or early April on a Friday night. Previous productions have included "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", "The Poisoned Apple" (an adaptation of Sleeping Beauty), "The Little Mermaid" and "Beauty and the Beast" and "Peter Pan."
Student Council
The students in grades 4 through 8 comprise our Student Council. The President is elected from 8th grade, the Vice President from 7th grade and the Secretary from the 6th grade. Each class also elects a representative to be a member of the Council. Student Council collects money for Estiven, our adopted boy from South America, holds Food Drives, Diaper and Baby Wipe collections for Momma's House and many other service projects.
Sports
Soccer: Students in grades 6,7 & 8 are invited to join our Soccer Teams, which are a part of the Catholic Middle School Sports Association. Games are played once or twice a week and we typically field a boys team and a girls team. Games are played against various other Catholic Schools in the area. The team is coached by our Physical Education teacher, Mr. Morgan and 5th grade teacher Mr. Chiarelli.
Basketball: Students in grades 6,7 & 8 are eligible to join the Basketball Teams. Again, we usually have a boys team and a girls team, which are a part of the Catholic Middle School Sports Association.
Volleyball: NEW THIS YEAR! We are excited to announce that SJS will field its first ever volleyball team to compete against other local Catholic middle schools. Tryouts will occur in January for the spring season.
